Nollywood in mourning: Pete Edochie, a legend dies

It is with immense sadness that the world of African cinema learned of the death of the Nigerian actor Pete Edochie, who died on May 3, 2024 at the age of 79. Icon of Nigerian cinema, better known as Igbo “Ebony”, Pete Edochie has left his mark on the history of Nollywood with his immense talent and his charismatic presence on screen.

Born in 1944 in Anambra State in Nigeria, Pete Edochie first pursued a career as a broadcaster before turning to cinema in the 1970s. His first major role was given to him in 1981 in the film “ Things Fall Apart”, adaptation of the eponymous novel by Chinua Achebe. This film propelled Pete Edochie onto the international scene and made him an essential figure in African cinema.

During his prolific career, Pete Edochie has appeared in over 100 films and television series, playing often complex and powerful characters. He was known for his intense acting and his ability to bring memorable characters to life. His deep voice and piercing gaze have made him an essential figure in African cinema.

Some of his most famous films include “Lionheart” (2018), “October 1st” (2014), “Battleground” (2017) and “Glamour Girls” (1994). He also starred in several popular television series, such as “Tinsel” and “Living in Bondage”.

Pete Edochie has received numerous awards during his career, including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in 2007 and the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Nollywood Film Festival in 2014.

The death of Pete Edochie is a great loss for African cinema. He was a true pillar of Nollywood and a source of inspiration for many generations of actors. His talent, his charisma and his contribution to the African cinema industry will never be forgotten.

Tributes to Pete Edochie

Many actors, directors and personalities from the world of African cinema have paid tribute to Pete Edochie following his death. Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari praised the memory of the actor, calling him “a national legend and icon of African cinema”. Nigerian actor Richard Mofe-Damijo wrote on Twitter: “Pete Edochie was a giant. A monument. A legend. He will be greatly missed.”

The death of Pete Edochie leaves a big void in the world of African cinema. But his legacy will live on through his films and the inspiration he gave to so many. Rest in peace, legend.
