Fans pay tribute to Bob Marley on his 77th birthday

The singer died in May 1981, at the age of 36, in Miami, United States, victim of cancer that began in the big toe.

Bob Marley died 41 years ago in 1981 from a type of skin cancer. However, even after four decades of death, fans still remember the reggae star. The proof is that on the day he would turn 77, this Sunday (6/2), the singer's name ended up in the most discussed topics on Twitter.

After a tour in Europe and many scheduled concerts, Bob Marley goes to Madison Square Garden in New York, United States. However, during the second performance at the venue, he was ill on stage. Even with a series of inquiries into his condition, he traveled to Pittsburgh, California, where he sang live for the last time.

Shortly after, it was revealed that the Jamaican had acral lentiginous melanoma, a type of skin cancer. Due to a Rastafarian philosophy, which regards the body as a sacred temple, he refused the option of amputating his toe, where the disease started.

With fragile health, after melanoma spread to the brain, lungs and stomach, the singer decided to return to Jamaica. However, in the middle of the trip, Bob was ill and had to stay in a hospital in Miami. He died on May 11, 1981.

Marley was born in 1945 to a middle-class white father and a black mother, in Jamaica.

His childhood was spent in poverty and he had little contact with his father, a naval officer who worked for the British government.

He left home at age 14 to pursue a musical career in Kingston.

In 1972 Marley arrived in Britain with his band 'The Wailers' to tour with Johnny Nash, hoping to launch his international career.
