While Jamaican music has always been present there, the reggae scene in Austin, Texas is underrated compared to Southern California and New York. Last year, "home girl" Mary Nicole John launched her label Cocojamzmusik in the capital city of Lone Star State.
Known as Coco, John kicked off the label's solo projects on October 31 with the release of Gyal Flex, a song by deejay Maestro Don. It's on the rhythm of Loving Colors.
In an interview with the Jamaica Observer, John said Cocojamzmusik isn't just about hot songs.
“The label has an extreme passion for moving music forward, although like any other endeavor to make a comeback, (but) that's not my main motivation. I have a passion for it. It's not like regular work; I won't work there certain hours and then I stop. It is an ongoing process and is always part of my life and my daily work, ”she said.
In addition to Gyal Flex, Cocojamzmusik's release list includes the Rainy Day beat with songs like Valiant's Enjoy Yuh Life and Dahvid Slur's Think Twice with Lanz, due out this month.
At the end of November, John plans to release Sad Song, another single on Loving Colors, by Kempo.
John is originally from Kansas City, Missouri, where she discovered reggae through Bob Marley, Burning Spear, Israel Vibration, Capleton
