Nelson Mandela's ex-wife Winnie Mandela is dead

Winnie Mandela is not anymore. The ex-wife of Nelson Mandela died on Monday, April 2, 2018 at the age of 81. His death is officially announced by his spokesperson Victor Dlamini: « It is with great sadness that we inform the public that Mrs Winnie Madikizela Mandela passed away at Milkpark Hospital in Johannesburg on Monday April 2 ». The one who died after a long illness, according to her spokesperson « left in peace at the very beginning of the afternoon, surrounded by her family »

A great figure in the fight againstApartheid, Winnie was a politically and ideologically committed woman. Husband with Nelson Mandela in 1958, she was an activist in theANC alongside her husband, and tirelessly during his twenty-seven years in prison. In 1996 the couple separated following a procedure which revealed Winnie's infidelities.

She was known for her violent speeches. She had also been the subject of many murder charges. Despite all this, she remains an icon of the fight against Apartheid and a figure of resistance.
